I always get in the weeds with combat rules, but I’m trying to use the “tables aren’t scary if they’re well organized and accessible” lesson from DCC to simplify it: Just look at the menu/table and decide what you want to do.
The “free bonus effect” thing is because I want to encourage players to do more than “hit it with my sword,” but if it’s a trade-off between damage and cool descriptive stuff, most go with damage every time.
