REVERB GAMERS 2012, #12: Do prefer collaborative or competitive games? What do you think that says about you? (Courtesy of Atlas Games. Visit them at www.atlas-games.com)
I play all kinds of games, but since my main gaming interest is role-playing, I’m firmly in the “collaborative” camp*. Even outside of role-playing, I usually prefer games that emphasize having fun over winning. My favorite non-RPG of the moment is Cards Against Humanity, and I don’t think we’ve bothered to count and see who won a game yet. I enjoy playing a competitive game every now and then, but collaborative games are generally more my style. I could claim that my preference for collaborative games makes me a wonderful person who values everyone’s input and puts the enjoyment of the whole group above personal ego or bragging rights, but that would be a terrible, terrible lie. The reality is that I just don’t have much tolerance for the drama and nonsense that too much competition usually leads to.
*And as far as I’m concerned, competition between the players and GM in an RPG is the dumbest thing ever, given that the GM can always “win” by having your character’s appendix burst or something.
